#1: European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI)
In 2025, the European Union is rolling out a new type of tool: the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI). It is a secure mobile application that allows citizens to store their personal information (name, ID card, driving licence, diplomas, etc.). Then they will be able to use it to identify themselves online.
For example, it will be possible to prove one’s age or sign an official document without having to present a physical card. The wallet is managed by Member States, which ensures greater security, transparency, and respect for privacy than solutions offered by major private platforms.

#2: eIDAS 2.0: A Strengthened Regulatory Framework
The development of European Digital Identity Wallets (EUDI) is based on a new European law: the eIDAS 2.0 regulation. This regulation requires each EU country to offer its citizens a digital identity wallet recognised throughout Europe. The eIDAS 2.0 replaces a first version which dated from 2014.
Thanks to eIDAS 2.0, citizens will be able to use their wallet in all EU countries, with the guarantee of retaining control over their personal data. They will choose which information to share, and with whom. The goal is also to reduce dependence on major private tech companies, such as Google or Apple, by offering a secure European alternative.
#3: Rise of Biometric Authentication
In 2025, biometrics is becoming an increasingly common method of identification. This refers to technologies that recognise a person through their fingerprints, face, voice or eyes. These methods are fast, simple, and highly secure, as they are much more difficult to forge than a password. They are used in both phones and sensitive online services (banks, financial institution, public administrations, healthcare, etc.).
As a result, the use of biometric datas is becoming the new standard for proving identity and fighting against identity fraud.
#4: Towards the End of Passwords
Traditional passwords, too often vulnerable, are being replaced by alternative authentication methods: biometrics, security tokens, multi-factor authentication, or physical keys.
In 2025, passwordless authentication is emerging as an effective response to security and user experience challenges. The aim is to make identification more secure and more seamless, and prevent fraud.
This shift is driven by major tech companies and public institutions. They see it as a way to reduce the risk of hacking while streamlining identification processes.

#5: Artificial Intelligence Serving Identification
Today, artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in identification systems and access control. Thanks to AI, verification processes are becoming more accurate, and more automated. For example, an AI can:
- Analyse an identity document in a few seconds
- Detect forged documents
- Compare a photo to a face in real time with a very low error rate
These technologies are used in many areas: remote bank account opening, identity checks in airports, or secure access to online platforms. AI also improves the detection of fraud attempts, thereby strengthening trust in digital tools. It is becoming a key ally in securing identity while simplifying the user experience.
Digital identification is entering a new era, marked by heightened demands for security, transparency, and sovereignty. Digital wallets, biometrics, ambitious regulatory frameworks, and passwordless authentication form a rapidly evolving ecosystem. For both public and private actors, anticipating these developments in verification methods is becoming essential to offer reliable, compliant, and user-centred solutions.
